Duluth Georgia
is home to a superb historic railway museum that offers daily train rides with vintage steam engines. Situated on 30 acres, it’s an open-air museum and includes more than 90 pieces of rolling stock, including several engines, and is the site of several special events throughout the year. If you love sports, Duluth really does have it all. The city boasts several parks - the largest being the 45-acre Bunten Park. This beautiful recreation area features 4 lighted tennis courts, walking and jogging trails, and a 29,000 square foot activity/playground area for children. Duluth, located in Gwinnett County, is also just a short distance from Lake Lanier and Stone Mountain Park. Lake Lanier Islands features a water slide, wave pool, mini golf course, fishing, boating and many other recreational opportunities. Stone Mountain Park is a 3,200-acre park with the world’s largest exposed mass of granite that features a carving of famous Confederate heroes. Gwinnett County parks offer lovely views of woodlands, lakes, meadows, streams, and gently rolling hills, complete with walking/jogging trails, fishing lakes, playgrounds, pavilions, and picnic areas. Parks and Recreation also offers tennis and aquatics facilities and programs; athletic sports fields and gymnasiums; community centers and activity buildings; historical, cultural, and interpretive facilities; and a public golf course. Duluth in located in Gwinnett County, which has 24 parks and recreational sites covering more than 3,000 acres. Parks range from 10 acres to the sprawling 700-acre Tribble Mill Regional Park. Amenities vary and include such features as picnic areas and green space; pavilions; walking and fitness trails; playgrounds; baseball/softball fields; football fields; soccer fields; community buildings; tennis and aquatic centers; a public golf course; indoor basketball courts; fishing lakes; a Frisbee disc golf course; and more. The Chattahoochee River and Natural Recreation Area is located in nearby Atlanta and is a collection of parks, encompassing fifty miles of the scenic Chattahoochee River. Activities include canoeing, kayaking and rafting on Class I and II waterways, plus hiking and mountain biking. In addition to recreational activities, the park contains a wide variety of natural habitats, 19th century historic sites and Native American archaeological sites. River access in Gwinnett County is found at two park units, Abbott’s Bridge and Medlock Bridge.
Another popular Duluth attraction is the Buford Artists Colony. Located on the historic Main Street of Buford, the colony is a collection of over 30 painters, jewelers, potters and other artists. Shopping is very abundant in Duluth and nearby communities, with everything from antiques and collectibles to one of the southeast’s largest shopping malls. Duluth’s historic downtown area also has a great collection of specialty and gift shops, antiques, art galleries and restaurants. In addition, Duluth is an easy 25-mile drive to Atlanta and all the dining, shopping, history and recreational sites the city has to offer.
